Linux Mint 12 “Lisa” released

Linux Mint 12 comes with a brand new desktop, built with Gnome 3 and MGSE.

MATE is a fork of Gnome 2 which is compatible with Gnome 3. Thanks to MATE, you can run both versions of Gnome on the same system.

Linux Mint 12 features two new themes called Mint-Z and Mint-Z-Dark which are based on Mint-X and Zukitwo.

The new default search engine is Duck Duck Go.

Linux Mint 12 features the following upstream components: Ubuntu 11.10, Linux 3.0, Gnome 3.2.

Linux Mint Spirit Font Alpha release available for download

Linux Mint’s own font has been introduced by Hirwen Harendal. According to him “Mint Spirit design rises in inspiration from Futura, Gillius, NeoGothis and Ubuntu fonts, keeping in mind the goal to obtain a clear, fresh, nice and modern typeface usable for text and screen rendering, based on the Linux Mint logo.”

Right now all the Mint Spirit fonts have a very basic Unicode coverage, the beta is going to cover Central and Eastern Europe, as well as Turkish alphabets, but also old-style figures and it’s going to have a more complete set of OpenType features. A web version of the font family is also planned. The license right now is GNU GPL V2 with font exception, but Hirwen says that it’s possible that the license will be changed to OFL.
